"Make the bot speak your language"

Marie-Lou David’s research project in ICT4D, contributes, by placing human-centered design at the forefront, to the broader discourse on technology’s role in rural development. She used two real-world projects as case studies: one in Burkina Faso which aims to empower Burkinabé women through entrepreneurship for sustainable forest products, and a related initiative in Mali focusing on cultivation and commercialization of artemisia for malaria treatment by small holder farmers women and youth entrepreneurs.

Antria Panayiotou presents a paper at the ICT4SD Conference 2023, on 3 August in Goa.

Small indigenous languages of the world are often spoken in regions where literacy rates are low and access to digital services is limited. Whereas voice information services could be useful for low literate speakers of these languages, written and audio data from these languages are hardly available. This paper presents a method for resourcing indigenous languages, with the aim to build targeted voice services based on an automatic speech recognition system. The proposed method for data collection has been co-developed with native speakers of an indigenous language, dagbanli and validated in the field, through a case study in northern Ghana.

AOPP is a farmer organization in Mali, with more than 250 member farmer cooperatives, and a footprint in the whole of the country. VU and AOPP have worked together since 2011 to help improve the food security situation in Mali, in the effort to this with sustainable agro-ecological innovations. Essential is the information exchange in the valule chain, for a performing market.
Participative, collaborative information analysis workshops are done, to elicit the tacit knowledge which is necessary for selforganization of the network. This project started in February 2019 and will be carried out in the coming months.

The Web alliance for Regreening in Africa

Although the Internet offers a wealth of information, and the World Wide Web has become today's paradigm of information and knowledge sharing on the planet, it is still inaccessible to the illiterate and to most rural communities. Moreover, most websites offering information about Africa are written in English, French, and other European languages. Few, however, contain relevant content information in local African languages. Furthermore, the Web is only accessible with an Internet connection, which most rural households do not have, relying instead on radio and mobile phones for communication. These are all important obstacles to overcome. But we believe this is possible to achieve - due to today's advanced ICT technologies and the local and international technical-scientific expertise present in the W4RA collaboration program.
